The DuBu’s as Ornithologists
A short story how we involuntarily became ornithologists at night.
We stand on a lonely and quiet parking lot in the middle of Belgium at night from the 8th to the 9th of September 2018. It is quiet at the small lake. Here and there you can hear the night call of an owl in the distance. An idyllic place that lulls us into a peaceful sleep.
But in the middle of the night we are suddenly torn from our sleep. Several cars drive into the parking lot. They park their vehicles about 30-40 meters beside us – with a sleeping plotter in their eyes. Several male representatives of the genus Homo Sapiens Nocturnus get out of the vehicles – and only one female. The excited males quickly courtship and dance around the female to attract her attention and favor. The initially hesitant mating ritual takes on more concrete and unambiguous traits after a short time.
We – Ornithologists
Suddenly – the female willingly strips off part of her plumage and the males pluck … No, the leg dresses pluck off her body. The plucking of the leg gowns doesn’t seem to cause them much pain, the excitement seems to be so strong. The hustle and bustle – in the truest sense of the word – takes its course. The female seems to have her hands full – and not only that. 🙂 🙂
We – quietly hidden in our hiding place with tinted windows – watch the goings-on with suppressed laughter and now know exactly to which species this species belongs. It is the species Homo Sapiens Nocturnus Voglerus (Voglerus is a fantasy word but means have sex).
PS: Unfortunately there are no pictures available because this shy species flees immediately when the flash of the camera lights up the night.
